Eco-Friendly Updates Drivers Can Expect in Upcoming Volkswagen ID Models

The debut of the VW ID.4 electric SUV proved that Volkswagen could deliver an EV that holds its own against established competitors while prioritizing cost of ownership. The original ID.4 went on to win the coveted 2021 World Car of the Year Award and appeared on numerous editors’ choice lists. Clearly, the German automaker’s VW electric SUV hit the sweet spot with drivers and reviewers alike.

So, what’s next for the Volkswagen brand and their electric vehicle lineup? In a word – sustainability.

In accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement, VW has formally committed to becoming a net carbon neutral company by 2050. The path to sustainability will affect where and how Volkswagen ID models are made. Further, there is a planned shift to sustainable materials and how EV batteries are reused and recycled. Drivers can look forward to the following changes as part of the automaker’s sustainability efforts.

The Volkswagen ID.4 and VW ID Models Will Have an Enhanced Presence

In 2020, Volkswagen only had one model of VW electric SUV for sale. Starting in 2024, the EV-to-traditional-vehicle ratio will begin to shift. The Volkswagen ID.4 will soon be joined by the ID. Buzz and the ID.7, an all-electric microbus and sedan, respectively.

Each vehicle in the ID lineup has been independently tested and verified to confirm they are carbon neutral products. Additionally, VW is teaming up with Octopus Energy to bring affordable carbon neutral charging to the homes of drivers. As the years go on, the push for sustainable options will continue to grow as Volkswagen expands their EV lineup and network.

Advancing the Way EV Batteries Are Used and Reused

The 2023 ID.4 and upcoming Volkswagen ID models will feature advanced batteries that deliver consistent performance and extensive range. However, VW understands drivers need a little extra assurance when it comes to the most important piece of their electric vehicle. Any new VW electric SUV, van, and sedan will come with a warranty that’s specific to the battery. The warranty ensures that electric vehicle owners still have 80% max charge capacity after 100,000 miles or eight years (whichever occurs first).

Further, the automaker is innovating the way their electric vehicle batteries can be repurposed. For example, many electric vehicle batteries at the end of their lifespan can be restored to working condition by replacing a few components. VW is also investing considerable effort in the vehicle-to-grid concept, which will allow for EV batteries to be used as an energy source for power grids.

As the journey to sustainability continues, drivers should expect to see VW to continue innovating through various reuse, recycling, and remanufacturing projects. Ideally, all Volkswagen ID models will have numerous repurposing options for batteries that have reached the end of their lifespan.

The Volkswagen ID.4 and Subsequent ID Models Will Shift to Recycled Materials

One of the most eco-friendly innovations that VW will be implementing in their Volkswagen ID models is the use of recycled materials. Some examples that are in works include:

  • Cellulose seat finishes.
  • Interior elements that use recycled plastic.
  • Non-animal leather steering wheel covers.
  • Carpet and roof linings that use 100% recycled polyester.
  • Seaqual® yarn seat covers (10% recycled marine debris, 90% PES yarn).
  • Phasing out chrome for eco-friendly liquid paint with a chrome appearance.

Keep in mind, the shift to recycled materials will only occur with certain elements of Volkswagen ID models, and only in cases where it makes sense. A spokesperson for the VW Group has stated that the use of recycled materials will not affect the standard of excellence drivers have come to expect from the Volkswagen brand.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 and Beyond

The mix of Volkswagen ID models is about to expand significantly over the next few years. Building upon the legacy of sustainability the Volkswagen ID.4 started, the 2024 VW ID. Buzz and 2025 VW ID.7 are primed to make a big splash in the EV market. Volkswagen will also be releasing a line of all-electric pickup trucks under their VW Scout brand, which are scheduled to ramp up production in 2026.

It’s also worth noting that the production of the Volkswagen ID.4 and many other ID models will be handled domestically. Not only does this simplify things from a logistical perspective, but it also ensures that Volkswagen ID models meet the eligibility requirements for any applicable federal tax credits.
