And When You Can See a Version of It At a Volkswagen Dealership Near You in Houston
The electric vehicle revolution is well underway, and although Volkswagen was a little late to the party, there’s a good reason for it: they came out of the gate with a certified winner. We’re referring, of course, to the Volkswagen electric SUV – the VW ID.4.
Originally released in the fall of 2020, the VW ID.4 was the automaker’s first effort in the electric vehicle space. The idea was to provide drivers with a vehicle that delivers all the classic hallmarks of a VW SUV combined with the sustainability of an EV. The results were above and beyond what anyone expected.
In addition to being one of the best-selling SUVs VW has ever released, the ID.4 was crowned the winner of the 2021 World Car of the Year Award, besting other major competitors in the space. The VW ID.4 would subsequently go on to be named one of Wards 10 Best User Experiences. The vehicle’s futuristic design, advanced telematics, and ease of use made it a hit with drivers and reviewers alike.
So, what’s next for VW in the electric vehicle space? Let’s dig into what drivers have to look forward to in 2023 and beyond.
There’s Plenty More Electric Vehicles on the Way
You didn’t think VW would release one EV and call it quits, did you? Heck no!
The plan was always to build out the Volkswagen family of electric vehicles once the VW ID.4 had a chance to make a good impression with drivers. Now that the ID.4 has established a solid reputation, you can look forward to seeing plenty more electric vehicles flying under the VW banner.
The ID. Buzz is an electric update on the Type 2 Microbus that is slated for domestic release. Joining the Buzz will be the ID.Aero – an electric sedan – and an EV version of the popular Volkswagen Tiguan, which is currently in the concept phase. The next Volkswagen electric SUV that is tracking for a domestic release is the VW ID.LIFE, which is rumored to cost around $30,000, making it one of the most affordable EV SUVs yet.
However, the vehicle that we’ll be focusing on today is the electric hatchback concept that’s currently in the works – the VW ID.3.
The VW ID.3 – Quick as Lightning, Runs on Electric
The upcoming slate of VW electric vehicles features a lot of heavy hitters. Translation: Volkswagen electric SUVs and vans will make up a large percentage of the overall lineup. However, in the spirit of keeping the EV lineup diverse, VW will be rolling out an all-electric version of a speedy hatchback – the VW ID.3.
Although many are hearing about the ID.3 for the first time in the states, the vehicle was introduced all the way back in 2016 at the Paris Motor Show. At that time, it was the very first EV concept car that Volkswagen was committed to launching. However, another three years went by until a production model debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
The VW ID.3 uses the modular electric drive matrix (MEB), which is what Volkswagen uses at the foundation for its lineup of EVs. The modular element is what sets it apart from other automakers; it can be adapted to accommodate the frame of an SUV, sedan, or a compact vehicle.
For those who are familiar with the VW Golf GTI lineup of vehicles, the VW ID.3 will carry on the tradition of hot, speedy hatchbacks that Volkswagen has become renowned for among auto enthusiasts. Drivers should expect a future-forward design, an elevated feature package, and plenty of single-charge range. However, driving range for the VW ID.3 will vary depending on the selected trim level.
The following are the four trims for the VW ID.3 with their corresponding single-charge range:
- ID.3 Pure Performance – 216 miles
- ID.3 Pro – 264 miles
- ID.3 Pro Performance – 264 miles
- ID.3 Pro S – 341 miles
Currently, there are no plans to roll out a Volkswagen ID.3 for sale domestically; however, there are rumblings in automotive circles that Volkswagen is working on an electric hatchback for the U.S. market to round out their EV lineup. Considering that Volkswagen currently has no electric version of the Golf GTI, it makes sense that they’d want to roll something out for that demographic of drivers.
