What to Expect from Volkswagen and Their Electric Vehicle Lineup

Although Volkswagen won’t be abandoning traditional vehicles that run on gasoline anytime soon, what can’t be ignored is that electric vehicles are taking up more and more of the market share with each passing year. Industry experts are estimating that electric vehicles will represent more than half the vehicles in circulation by the year 2040. It’s also worth noting that Car and Driver reported that registrations for electric vehicles went up by 60 percent in the first quarter of 2022.

Clearly, electric vehicles are on the rise, and the data and statistics support it. Proof of concept has been established, and the modern-day car-buyer is convinced that electric vehicles are capable of being their daily driver. Adding fuel to the proverbial fire, this year we saw record high gas prices. In fact, some drivers reported paying well over $100 for a tank of gas during the summer. The ecological benefits along with the savings on gasoline have motivated many people to at least look into new electric cars.

So, how exactly is Volkswagen adapting their approach to the changing vehicle market? What is the future of EVs as this company sees it?

What Volkswagen is Doing with Electric Vehicles Now

To bring you up to speed, Volkswagen currently has one VW electric car for sale – the ID.4. It was the winner of the 2021 World Car of the Year Award and was also recently named one of Ward’s Best User Experiences. In addition to featuring a future-forward design in one of the most advanced feature packages ever offered, the VW ID.4 gets up to 275 miles on a single charge (Pro model). It has a starting MSRP of just under $38,000, which makes it one of the more affordable new electric cars for sale on the market.

However, the plan was never to release one electric vehicle and be done with it. The Volkswagen ID.4 was always intended to be the first of many new electric cars. Currently in the pipeline, Volkswagen has the VW ID.Buzz, the VW ID.LIFE, and the ID.Aero. They are an electric SUV, microbus, and luxury sedan, respectively. You’ll hear more about these vehicles in the coming year or two as they get closer to release.

News From the VW Group About its EV Plans

There has been a changing of the guard at the leadership helm for the VW group. Herbert Diess, the former CEO of the VW Group stepped down recently, which had some industry experts wondering if the original plan to transition over to electric vehicles would remain in place. On day one, Oliver Blume, the new CEO of the VW group, made his intentions quite clear on the matter. Electric vehicles are still very much in the future of Volkswagen.

Blume was quoted, saying, “I am a fan of e-mobility and I stand by this path…we will keep the current pace and, where possible, increase it.” Blume has also gone on record about how he plans to find the right rhythm for a stable transformation in the EV market. The Volkswagen Group is making heavy investments in EV battery sourcing, which is reported to be taking place in Canada once the deal is finalized. Additionally, the VW group has made public the news that the VW ID.4 will be manufactured domestically in their Chattanooga, Tennessee plant. Not only does this circumvent the supply chain issue, but it also means that drivers will be able to take advantage of the federal tax credit (up to $7,500).
