Your engine works in concert with itself, opening and closing the right valves at the right time as your cylinders engage in combustion. These valves and cylinders aren’t controlled by a computer or by electricity, just by gears, shafts, and your timing belt. A timing belt is vital to make sure your cylinders are firing when they should be and venting/preparing in the interim. When your timing belt starts to wear out, it’s vitally important to change out that belt before it causes any damage to your engine.
Your timing belt connects two parts of your engine known as the camshaft and the crankshaft. The crankshaft is connected to the top of the cylinders in your engine, converting the up and down movement of the cylinders into rotational motion. The camshaft is near the base of the cylinders, and its rotation presses on valves to keep them open or closed at the right time. Since these two actions, the firing of the cylinder and the opening and closing of fuel and air valves, need to happen at the right time, the timing belt makes sure that these two shafts rotate in sync with each other, maintaining the flow of the engine’s combustion.
A timing belt is different from a serpentine belt, in that it only runs from engine part to engine part. The serpentine belt runs to other pulleys, driving other vital systems in your car, but the timing belt is there to keep your engine running at full efficiency. If your serpentine belt snaps or slips, the problems it causes are solvable until it can be replaced, but if your timing belt snaps or slips, it will almost immediately cause problems with your engine function.
We provide OEM timing belts that are sourced directly from Volkswagen. These belts are made to work in your specific car and have been rigorously tested and engineered to give you maximum performance. We prefer OEM parts because they guarantee safety and performance that comes with the Volkswagen name, and there’s nothing better we can do for your car than help you trust its workings.
While you can replace your timing belt between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, the important thing is to replace it before it snaps or starts slipping. Our technicians can check your timing belt to determine if it needs replacement, and we’ll make sure you’re protected from the perils of a broken belt. Set up your appointment online today or give us a call during our regular service department hours. We’ll conduct a complimentary multi-point inspection with every service.
